Manna Fund, Incorporated (Manna Fund, INC) was developed in order to provide direct payment of inpatient treatment costs due to inadequate insurance coverage for people with eating disorders. This effort is due to help fray the high cost of specialized care and to avoid the often difficult decisions to be made for families of ED patients (ongoing treatment for seriously ill patient versus exorbitant cost of care). Our desire is that all recipients, and eventually, all individuals who have been personally affected by an eating disorder, will receive the appropriate care to help them eliminate their eating disorder altogether.
The concept for Manna Fund was birthed early in 2006. Dr. Genie Burnett and her colleagues have specialized in the treatment of eating disorders at the outpatient level of care, and became increasingly concerned about the lack of adequate inpatient treatment funding available to those suffering from life-threatening eating disorders. Through her own personal and clinical experience and in-depth research, Dr. Burnett discovered an alarming number of obstacles and “barriers to care” for those who found themselves needing inpatient treatment for eating disorders, the most prominent being lack of insurance coverage, coverage with inadequate benefits, lack of or low reimbursement rates, and coverage that restricts certain types of specialized treatments (i.e. no group therapy or family therapy), therapists, and treatment centers. As result of these disheartening truths, the decision was made to form a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in 2007 to be fully dedicated to “fill the funding gap” for individuals needing the most immediate and critical level of care – inpatient and/or residential treatment.
Dr. Burnett developed a passion for helping those with eating disorders based on her own personal struggle with an eating disorder at a young age. Having fully recovered and understanding the process of recovery over the past 20+ years, Dr. Burnett. Currently a psychologist and a founding partner of Manna Treatment & Counseling, Dr. Burnett continues to aid others in their struggles with eating disorders. She knows that God and God alone is the reason for her success in recovery, and the Author of her path. She aims at helping others through their recovery, and also hopes that others will be able to authentically connect with their Heavenly Father as they forge through their recovery.
